Reuters: Al-Qaeda Still Has Operational Capacity in Afghanistan

Al-Qaeda has become weaker since the attacks of 11 September 2001 but still retains the ability to operate and maintain influence in several parts of the world, Reuters has reported.

The Reuters report says the group has increasingly relied on a decentralised network, with affiliated groups operating in parts of Africa and South Asia.

Afghanistan remains a key concern. United Nations monitoring reports have raised questions about the continued presence and activities of Al-Qaeda in the country and its relationship with the Taliban.

The Taliban have rejected claims that Al-Qaeda is operating in Afghanistan.

Reuters reports that, despite losing much of the structure and influence it had before 2001, Al-Qaeda continues to maintain links with regional groups and remains a security concern in several parts of the world.
