NATO allies say they disrupted a suspected Russian operation in the spring of 2026 that involved training submarines to potentially damage critical undersea internet cables in Arctic waters.

According to Reuters, Britain, Norway and the United States monitored submarines linked to a Russian deep-sea operations unit near the Svalbard archipelago.

The report says the Russian submarines were carrying out exercises that could potentially be used to cut underwater fibre-optic cables. Such cables are vital to global internet and financial communications.

Western officials are concerned that Russia may be expanding its capabilities to carry out potential sabotage against critical NATO infrastructure.
