Chinese President Xi Jinping has called for a fair and inclusive global governance framework for artificial intelligence (AI), urging countries to strengthen international cooperation to ensure the technology benefits all of humanity. Speaking at the opening ceremony of the 2026 World AI Conference and High-Level Meeting on Global AI Governance in Shanghai, Xi said AI should serve the common good and become a driver of shared prosperity and global security. He outlined four priorities for the future development of AI: promoting open innovation and international collaboration, ensuring AI remains safe and under human control, safeguarding cultural diversity and shared human values, and strengthening multilateral cooperation with the United Nations playing a central role in global AI governance. Xi also warned against widening technological and digital divides, calling for greater support for developing countries to build AI capacity and ensure equitable access to the technology. His remarks come as governments around the world seek to establish international rules and standards to address the opportunities and risks posed by the rapid advancement of artificial intelligence.
