Iran’s new leader, Mojtaba Khamenei, has vowed to avenge the death of his father, former Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. In a message issued for Ali Khamenei’s funeral and burial, Mojtaba Khamenei thanked what he said were tens of millions of mourners from Iran and Iraq who attended the ceremonies. He said those he described as his father’s “criminal and disgraced killers” would face retribution. “Their hope of a peaceful death in their beds will be buried with them,” the statement said. Iranian authorities have not identified those Mojtaba Khamenei was referring to, and the remarks have not been independently verified.
