US President Donald Trump has said he will respect the results of the country’s midterm elections on 3 November if the vote is “honest”, raising fresh questions about whether he would accept a defeat for his Republican Party.
“I will, if they’re honest elections,” Trump told reporters at Joint Base Andrews in Maryland on Tuesday, 27 October, as he prepared to travel to Texas for a campaign event, according to Reuters.
Trump was asked whether he would respect the election results even if Republicans lost control of Congress. He acknowledged that such an outcome was possible and said he would work with Democrats if necessary, adding that he could use his presidential veto power in negotiations.
The comments come as Trump and his allies have repeatedly raised concerns about election integrity ahead of the vote. His administration has pursued legal challenges involving voter registration and election procedures in several states, while election officials have disputed some of its claims.
The midterm elections will determine control of the US Congress for the remainder of Trump’s term. All 435 seats in the House of Representatives and 35 of the Senate’s 100 seats are up for election. Several states will also hold gubernatorial contests.
The results could significantly affect Trump’s ability to advance his legislative agenda, as the party controlling Congress has considerable influence over legislation, government spending and congressional investigations.
Trump’s remarks have drawn attention because he continued to challenge the outcome of the 2020 presidential election, which he lost to Joe Biden, despite a lack of evidence supporting his claims of widespread fraud.
