UN warns funding cuts could force Afghan women’s organisations to close

The United Nations has warned that funding shortages could force more than half of the women’s organisations still operating in Afghanistan to suspend their activities or close within the next year.

UN Women said 74 organisations surveyed in April were facing serious financial difficulties, while nearly three-quarters had experienced funding cuts in 2025.

The UN has urged international donors to maintain and increase support for programmes assisting Afghan women and girls, warning that further cuts could deepen their isolation and worsen the humanitarian situation.

The Taliban says it respects women’s rights in accordance with its interpretation of Islamic law and Afghan culture.
