Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa has said his government is working to reach a security agreement with Israel that could pave the way for a broader and lasting peace. In an interview with Al Jazeera, al-Sharaa said Damascus was pursuing the agreement with the participation of several countries. “We are working to reach a security agreement with Israel with the involvement of a number of countries,” he said. al-Sharaa added that Syria was avoiding confrontation with Israel and had no interest in escalating tensions. He said that if the proposed security agreement were achieved, it could open the door to comprehensive peace, while stressing that Syria would not relinquish its claim to the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights.
