New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani says the city does not have the legal authority to arrest Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu or enforce an arrest warrant issued by the International Criminal Court (ICC). Mamdani, who previously pledged during his election campaign to seek Netanyahu’s arrest, said his administration had examined all possible legal avenues for implementing the ICC warrant in New York City. However, he said the authority to enforce such a warrant rests with the US federal government. He also called on Washington to enforce the ICC arrest warrant if Netanyahu travels to New York. Netanyahu is expected to visit New York in September to attend the United Nations General Assembly.
