An online petition calling for Argentina’s removal from the 2026 FIFA World Cup has collected more than 23 million signatures from supporters in 170 countries, following controversy surrounding the team’s conduct during the tournament. The campaign was launched after disputes linked to the World Cup final between Argentina and Spain, which Spain won 1-0 after extra time to claim the title. FIFA has announced that its disciplinary committee is reviewing incidents that occurred after the final, involving players and members of Argentina’s coaching staff. Supporters behind the petition have accused Argentina and match officials of favouritism and called for the team to be banned from future World Cup competitions. FIFA has not issued a response to the demand. The petition, which gathered more than 23.3 million signatures, has become one of the largest online campaigns in history, although it remains short of the record 24.3 million signatures collected by the Jubilee 2000 campaign in 1997, which called for debt relief for poorer countries.
