German authorities have announced the deportation of nearly 30 Afghan asylum seekers from the country on a charter flight to Afghanistan. According to German media reports, the flight departed on Tuesday evening from Leipzig/Halle Airport and arrived in Kabul. The deportees were Afghan men who had been designated for removal by various German states. Germany’s DPA news agency reported that most of those deported had been convicted of serious crimes and had received deportation orders. The flight marks the second deportation of Afghan asylum seekers from Germany this year. Previously, in April, 25 Afghan asylum seekers were returned to Kabul on a charter flight. German media reported that the latest deportation operation was carried out following direct coordination between German authorities and the Taliban administration. At the same time, a number of protesters gathered at Leipzig Airport to oppose the deportations and called for the process to be halted. The deportations continue despite repeated concerns raised by human rights organisations regarding the human rights situation and security conditions in Afghanistan.
