Peter Magyar, Hungary’s prime minister-designate, has announced that his incoming government will halt the country’s planned withdrawal from the International Criminal Court (ICC) and will comply with its legal obligations. He stated that any individual wanted by the ICC would be subject to arrest upon entering Hungarian territory. Magyar said this position has been clearly communicated to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. He emphasized that member states of the ICC are legally required to detain individuals facing arrest warrants issued by the court. In November 2024, the ICC issued an arrest warrant for Netanyahu as part of its investigation into the Gaza war, citing allegations of war crimes and crimes against humanity. If implemented, this stance would mark a significant shift in Hungary’s policy toward the ICC and Israel.
