Dispute Over Lebanon Clouds Iran–U.S. Ceasefire Agreement

Shehbaz Sharif has announced that Iran, the United States, and their allies have agreed to an immediate ceasefire following nearly 40 days of conflict, with mediation led by Pakistan. Talks in Islamabad are ongoing to reach a final agreement. However, differences have emerged over the scope of the ceasefire. Benjamin Netanyahu stated that Israel would only halt attacks on Iran and that the ceasefire does not extend to Lebanon. Netanyahu emphasized that Israel’s border with Lebanon remains under close monitoring and that there has been no change in the country’s military posture. This disagreement indicates that Pakistan’s announcement largely reflects an understanding between Iran and the United States, while full acceptance by key regional actors, including Israel, has yet to be secured. Negotiations aimed at achieving a lasting peace and a comprehensive agreement are continuing.
