KABUL: Shawn Vandeveer, the head of AfghanEvac, has sent a letter to the offices of the U.S. Congress, calling for immediate and practical actions to support Afghans who collaborated during U.S. missions and are now facing danger and uncertainty alongside their families. AfghanEvac, an organization supporting Afghan refugees in the United States, announced on Friday, that many legal pathways for the relocation and resettlement of Afghan collaborators have effectively been stalled over the past year. The letter states that programs previously approved by Congress have not been effectively implemented due to administrative delays and a lack of attention in the follow-up process, undermining much of their effectiveness. According to the letter, the process for family reunification for Afghans who worked with the U.S. has also severely slowed, leaving many individuals in uncertain legal situations and exposed to serious threats. Vandeveer noted in part of the letter: “These decisions directly harm individuals who complied with the laws, trusted the U.S., and now find themselves either caught in legal limbo or facing new dangers.” AfghanEvac emphasized that continuing these efforts in the new year is essential to ensuring that the U.S. commitments to Afghan collaborators are fulfilled effectively.
