BEIJING: Member countries of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO), on Monday expressed their opposition to the proposal from the “E3” (France, Germany, and the UK) to reinstate United Nations Security Council sanctions against Iran. In a final statement from the summit, SCO members emphasized the importance of fully implementing Security Council Resolution 2231, stating that any arbitrary interpretation of it undermines the authority of the Security Council. France, the UK, and Germany had previously called for the reinstatement of sanctions using the “snapback” mechanism, but Tehran labeled this action as illegal and unjust, describing the 30-day diplomacy proposal as “blackmail” from the Europeans. It is worth noting that the possibility of activating the snapback mechanism under the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) continues until October of this year, with European countries asserting that the doors for diplomacy with Iran remain open.
