BEIJING: The Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) meeting kicks off today, September 1, in Tianjin, China. This summit will see the participation of over 20 world leaders and 10 heads of international organizations, focusing on enhancing multilateral cooperation in security, economic, and cultural areas. Leaders from Russia, India, Pakistan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, Turkey, Belarus, Mongolia, Cambodia, Vietnam, Malaysia, Nepal, and Egypt, as well as the secretaries-general of the United Nations, ASEAN, and the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO), will be participating. According to a report from the Chinese press center, the summit will take place under the theme “Maintaining the Shanghai Spirit,” with significant discussions on regional security and counter-terrorism efforts aimed at combating terrorism, extremism, and separatism. Additionally, the summit will address increasing trade and economic cooperation, focusing on infrastructure projects such as the China-Kyrgyzstan-Uzbekistan railway, energy corridors, and collaborative actions on climate change and renewable energy. Cultural exchanges and strengthening connections among people through educational and tourism programs are also key objectives emphasized by China. It is expected that the 2025 SCO summit in Tianjin will not only be notable for its unprecedented scale—featuring 3,000 journalists and over 20 international leaders—but also serve as a symbol of collective efforts to enhance multilateralism in response to global challenges.
