WASHINGTON: U.S. President Donald Trump
reiterated on Friday night that the United States will not permit Iran to enrich uranium on its soil.
While traveling in New Jersey, he stated: “They will not enrich… and if they do, we will have to take a different path.” Trump did not elaborate on this path, but his comments suggest actions beyond negotiation.
He added, “We do not wish to escalate tensions, but if necessary, we will have to proceed. We have no option but this… We will never allow enrichment.”
The remarks come just two days after Ali Khamenei, the Supreme Leader of Iran, rejected the U.S. proposal regarding enrichment, which was presented under the framework of a
“regional alliance.” This stance has raised doubts about the prospects for the sixth round of negotiations between Tehran and Washington.
