Germany Links Middle East Reconstruction to Ceasefire, Says Merz

Berlin — German Chancellor Friedrich Merz has said that establishing a ceasefire in the Middle East is a prerequisite for any discussions on post-conflict reconstruction in the region. Speaking at a press conference, Merz stated that once the time comes to rebuild destroyed infrastructure, “we can discuss everything,” but stressed that hostilities must first come to an end. He did not explicitly mention Iran, instead referring broadly to the “Middle East” in his remarks. According to a 14-point agreement between Iran and the United States, a $300 billion fund is expected to be allocated for “economic reconstruction and development.” However, the United States is reportedly not required to participate directly in the process.
