Five Major Challenges Facing the Iran–US Agreement

Experts say that despite the signing of an agreement between Iran and the United States, recent developments in the Persian Gulf and the wider region indicate that the implementation of the deal faces serious challenges. The resumption of reciprocal attacks, ambiguity over the political will of both sides, and ongoing regional tensions have cast doubt on the future of the agreement. According to Reuters, less than two weeks after the signing of a memorandum between Tehran and Washington, mutual attacks in the Persian Gulf, an Iranian strike on US bases in Bahrain and Kuwait, and continued clashes in Lebanon have put the fragile ceasefire under severe strain. Analysts identify five key factors as the main challenges to the agreement: instability on the ground, uncertainty over the political commitment of both sides, continuing regional tensions, the absence of a monitoring mechanism for implementation, and domestic pressure in both Iran and the United States. They believe that if these challenges are not managed, the likelihood of the agreement’s failure will increase. However, if implementation mechanisms are strengthened and tensions are reduced, the deal could evolve into a more stable framework for de-escalating the crisis.
