The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) has said that it is providing educational services for girls through community-based classes located near their homes. UNICEF Afghanistan said on Wednesday, June 24, that these classes are established with the participation of local communities and provide access to education for girls who have been deprived of schooling due to the long distance to government schools. According to UNICEF, the programme is being implemented with financial support from Japan and will create educational opportunities for a greater number of children in Afghanistan. UNICEF added that the shortage of schools in rural and remote areas remains one of the main challenges preventing children from accessing education in the country. According to the agency, the long distance between schools and homes, along with families’ economic difficulties, are among the major factors that have left many children in parts of Afghanistan out of school.
