Nasir Ahmad Faiq, Afghanistan’s representative to the United Nations, has said that no system can endure through censorship, repression, and concealing the truth, reacting to a Taliban directive banning the use of smartphones in government offices. Faiq said on Wednesday, June 17 on X the measure would deprive Afghan citizens of the most basic tools of communication and access to information. According to him, the decision comes at a time when the world is using science, technology, and artificial intelligence to improve people’s lives and create new opportunities for progress and prosperity. The Afghan representative to the United Nations added that half of Afghanistan’s population is currently deprived of the right to education, higher education, and employment, while restrictions and bans have also been imposed on the teaching of modern sciences and skills in schools and educational centres. Faiq said that fundamental human and Islamic freedoms are being widely violated and that deliberately depriving a nation of knowledge, awareness, technology, and the path of progress cannot be justified. He also warned that condemning people to poverty, ignorance, and isolation through educational and informational restrictions would not only hinder the country’s development but would also put the future of coming generations at risk.
