Trump: Safe Passage of Oil Tankers Through the Strait of Hormuz Has Begun

U.S. President Donald Trump has announced that oil tankers and other vessels carrying petroleum are now passing safely through the Strait of Hormuz, adding that new shipping routes have also been made available in the area. He said oil tankers are moving through the southern channel of the Strait of Hormuz without threat and under full security, and that the process is continuing in a way that allows petroleum cargoes to be transported more easily. The remarks come as several international media outlets, including Reuters, The Guardian and New York Post, have reported that following the announcement of a preliminary agreement between the United States and Iran aimed at reducing tensions, some maritime routes in the Strait of Hormuz have been reactivated and limited tanker traffic has resumed. The Strait of Hormuz is regarded as one of the world’s most strategically important oil transit chokepoints, and any change in its security situation has a direct impact on global energy markets.
