Brussels – The European Union’s Commissioner for Migration, Magnus Brunner, has said that discussions with the Islamic Emirate regarding the return of migrants are not safe or easy, but that it is not possible for the EU to avoid engaging in talks with the authorities in Afghanistan. Speaking in an interview on Euronews’ programme “Europe Talks,” Brunner stressed that the European Union is obliged to maintain contact with regimes in third countries, even when it does not agree with their policies. He said that in the case of Afghanistan there are examples of individuals who are criminal elements and pose a security threat to member states. He made these remarks in response to a question on whether Germany has reached an agreement with the Taliban regarding the return of Afghan nationals who have been deported.
