A number of Afghans living in the United States have called for an end to Pakistani military strikes on Afghan territory during gatherings held in Washington, DC, Virginia and Maryland. The “Afghan-American Community” said in a statement released on Friday that the attacks had resulted in civilian casualties and raised serious human rights and legal concerns. The statement stressed that attacks targeting civilians, or carried out without sufficient measures to prevent harm to non-combatants, could constitute serious violations of international law. The organisation also claimed that repeated Pakistani military strikes in Afghanistan had killed at least hundreds of civilians across different provinces of the country. According to the Afghan-American Community, the actions have raised serious concerns under international law, noting that Article 2, Paragraph 4 of the United Nations Charter prohibits the use of force against the sovereignty and territorial integrity of states. The statement further said the organisation supports calls for an independent and transparent international investigation into the attacks and demanded accountability. The group also urged the international community to launch an immediate, credible and independent inquiry into the incidents. The statement comes amid continuing tensions between the Taliban administration and Pakistan, with reports of clashes and cross-border attacks continuing to emerge from frontier areas.
