The group known as ISIS-K has claimed responsibility for an attack on Maulana Mohammad Idris, a member of Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam and a teacher at Darul Uloom Haqqania. In a statement published on one of its affiliated Telegram channels, the group said its gunmen targeted the vehicle carrying Maulana Idris on Tuesday in the Charsadda area. It said one person was killed and two of his guards were wounded in the attack. Maulana Mohammad Idris was considered a close associate of Maulana Fazlur Rehman, the leader of Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam, and was among the senior teachers at Darul Uloom Haqqania. A number of leaders of the Afghan Taliban are reported to have studied at the seminary. However, Pakistani security officials have not yet formally confirmed the incident or provided further details. An increase in targeted attacks against religious and political figures in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa has raised concerns about the security situation in the region.
