Pakistani media have reported that Sheikh Mohammad Idris, a prominent religious scholar, was killed on Tuesday morning 5 May in an attack by armed individuals in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province. According to police, two assailants riding a motorcycle opened fire directly at the scholar while he was on his way to a religious school. Two police guards were also injured in the incident. The attackers fled the scene after carrying out the assault. The incident has sparked widespread public reaction, with hundreds of religious school students, scholars, and members of Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam staging protests in the Charsadda area. Protesters have called for the identification and arrest of those responsible, as well as improved security for religious scholars. Meanwhile, Mohammad Tahir wrote on the social media platform X that Sheikh Mohammad Idris had hundreds of students across Pakistan. No group has so far claimed responsibility for the attack, and Pakistani security forces have launched a search operation to apprehend the perpetrators. Pakistan, particularly its border regions, has witnessed a rise in insecurity in recent years, posing serious challenges to daily life in provinces such as Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan.
