US Congressman says Americans no longer want new wars

Jason Crow has said the United States lost thousands of troops and spent trillions of dollars in the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq, and that American citizens no longer support entering new conflicts in the Middle East. Speaking publicly, he stressed that people in the United States are currently more concerned with improving domestic conditions, including access to food, healthcare services, and more affordable energy. The member of Congress also criticised the administration of Donald Trump, saying officials have yet to clearly define the ultimate objective, an exit strategy, or a vision for ending any potential conflict with Iran. According to him, this lack of clarity has contributed to declining public support for a possible war. Crow added that over the past two decades, the United States has spent between $5 trillion and $8 trillion, lost around 7,000 service members, and seen tens of thousands return home with physical and psychological injuries. He emphasised that the main burden of these wars has been borne by the working class. These remarks come as the withdrawal of US forces from Afghanistan in August 2021 continues to face widespread criticism both within the United States and internationally. Meanwhile, Donald Trump has previously described the withdrawal as “disastrous,” stating that it would not have happened under his leadership. He has also insisted on maintaining a US presence at Bagram Air Base and has called on the Taliban to hand over control of the facility to the United States.
