FIFA Opens Path for Afghanistan Women’s Football Team to Compete Internationally

The FIFA has approved a significant regulatory change allowing Afghanistan’s women’s football team to participate in official international competitions. The move has been described by sports authorities as an unprecedented step in global sport. Under the decision by the FIFA Council, Afghan women players — including members of the “Afghan Women United” team established with FIFA’s support — will be permitted to compete internationally. This comes as the national football federation inside Afghanistan remains unable to form a women’s national team. FIFA stated that the amendments enable the organization, in coordination with the Asian Football Confederation, to form and recognize a representative team in exceptional circumstances where a member federation is unable to do so. FIFA President Gianni Infantino described the decision as a “powerful and unprecedented step” emphasizing that its purpose is to prevent players from being excluded from international competition due to circumstances beyond their control. He added: “By providing Afghan women with the opportunity to compete officially, we are turning our principles into action.”
