Review of Afghan Refugee Transfer; Taliban Urge Return

As Donald Trump considers relocating Afghan refugees to the Democratic Republic of the Congo, the Taliban have asserted that security in Afghanistan has improved and that refugees in Qatar can return. Abdul Qahar Balkhi said in a statement that the group is providing assurances through a defined mechanism that there are no security threats, adding that no one is compelled to leave the country for safety reasons. The remarks follow a report by The New York Times indicating that around 1,100 Afghan refugees who assisted the United States could be transferred to either Afghanistan or the Congo, a proposal that has drawn criticism from some U.S. senators. Thousands of Afghans who fled after the Taliban’s return to power remain in limbo, particularly in Qatar, awaiting resettlement. According to the United Nations, some former military personnel and government employees who returned from Iran and Pakistan have faced risks of persecution, detention, and, in some cases, death.
