The World Food Programme has warned that worsening hunger and malnutrition in Afghanistan are putting millions of children at serious risk. The agency says that in 2026, around 3.7 million children and nearly one million women are expected to suffer from acute malnutrition, with potentially irreversible effects on health and development. With support from partners including the UK, food assistance programs have so far reached about 9 million women and children across the country. Meanwhile, the United Nations reports that nearly 22 million people in Afghanistan depend on humanitarian aid. The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs has requested $1.7 billion to scale up emergency assistance, warning that without adequate funding, the crisis could cause long-term damage to an entire generation.
