AP: U.S. May Have Questioned Wrong Man in Kabul Airport Attack Case

The Associated Press reports that U.S. authorities may have questioned the wrong individual in connection with the deadly 2021 Kabul airport attack. The issue emerged during the trial of Mohammad Sharifullah, an Afghan national accused in the case. His defense lawyer argued in court that his client had no role in the attack and that his alleged confessions were false, claiming the U.S. had charged the wrong person. Sharifullah is accused of links to ISIS-Khorasan and involvement in the suicide bombing at Kabul airport. Prosecutors, however, say he has also admitted to other activities for the group. The attack, carried out during the U.S. withdrawal from Afghanistan, killed nearly 200 people, including 13 American service members and about 170 civilians. The trial is currently underway in Virginia and is expected to last about a week.
