UNICEF Says The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) has announced that one-third of schools in Afghanistan do not have access to safe drinking water, and half of them lack adequate sanitation facilities. According to a report published on Monday (March 23), the lack of clean water and health services — especially for girls — is one of the main reasons for school dropouts. The report states that more than 60 percent of schools do not have separate toilets for girls, an issue that has made regular attendance difficult and increased dropout rates. UNICEF added that it is working with the World Bank to improve access to water, sanitation, and health services in Afghan schools. According to the organization, so far nine schools in Logar province have been equipped with new facilities, directly benefiting more than 2,300 children and 47 teachers and leading to increased student attendance.
