The Taliban Supreme Court has announced that seven people were flogged in Zabul Province as part of the group’s ongoing use of corporal punishment. According to a statement released on Monday, March 15, the individuals were punished in Shah Joy District after being accused of “sodomy” and theft. The statement said the Taliban sentenced them to prison terms ranging from eight months to three years, along with 20 to 30 lashes. Public flogging by the Taliban has continued in recent days. On Sunday, the group reportedly flogged 21 people in Kabul on charges related to the sale and trafficking of drugs, sentencing them to prison terms as well. Observers say the continuation of flogging and other forms of punishment by the Taliban violates fundamental human rights and reflects a climate of fear and repression in Afghanistan.
