Sahar Fetrat, a researcher at Human Rights Watch, says that while the Taliban are attempting to suppress women, many are preserving their dignity and independence through home-based businesses, education, and documenting violations of their rights. In a video message to the human rights organization Femena, Fetrat stated that women’s small online home businesses—such as tailoring, handicrafts, and cooking—have become effective tools for maintaining dignity and independence for women in Afghanistan. She added that some women, while protecting their own dignity and independence, are also documenting cases of women’s rights violations and helping bring international attention to the situation of women in Afghanistan. According to reports by human rights organizations, women in Afghanistan under Taliban rule are facing one of the most severe human rights crises. Many have lost fundamental rights, including access to education, employment, freedom of movement, and the ability to make choices about their own lives, leaving many confined to their homes.
