The United Nations Security Council has announced that the United States did not approve a draft resolution to extend the mandate of the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) for another year. The council is scheduled to vote on Monday, March 25, on a draft resolution that would extend UNAMA’s mandate for the next three months. The draft was prepared by China for the third time, after the United States declined to support two previous versions. According to a statement from the Security Council, the United States said that a comprehensive review of UNAMA’s mission should be conducted during the next three months. The council also noted that UNAMA is one of the most expensive special political missions of the United Nations and operates in a complex environment. Therefore, a review is necessary to determine whether the mission remains appropriate and fully implementable.
