China Calls for De-escalation Between Pakistan and Taliban

Yue Xiaoyong has held talks with Pakistani officials on reducing border clashes with the Taliban. During meetings with Amna Baloch and Mohammad Sadiq, the sides stressed the importance of preventing further escalation, returning to negotiations, and promoting peace. Counter-terrorism was also discussed. The talks came after Yue previously met Amir Khan Muttaqi to discuss halting the clashes. Meanwhile, Wang Yi told Muttaqi in a phone call that China is ready to mediate to help end the conflict between the Taliban and Pakistan. Fighting between the two sides has continued for more than 14 days. On Friday night, Pakistani forces reportedly targeted areas in Kabul, Kandahar Province, Paktia Province, and Paktika Province. Pakistan’s Ministry of Information said 663 Taliban members and militants have been killed so far, while the Taliban claim that 55 Pakistani soldiers have died in the clashes.
