UN Reports 27% Rise in Security Incidents in Afghanistan

António Guterres has reported that 2,660 security-related incidents were recorded in Afghanistan between November 1, 2025, and January 31, 2026—an increase of 27.8 percent compared with the same period the previous year. During this period, anti-Taliban groups, including the Afghanistan Freedom Front and the National Resistance Front of Afghanistan, claimed responsibility for 36 attacks against Taliban forces, of which 14 were confirmed by the United Nations. The attacks occurred in several provinces, including Badakhshan Province, Balkh Province, Faryab Province, Herat Province, Kunar Province, Kunduz Province, Kabul Province, Kandahar Province, Logar Province, and Panjshir Province. The attacks included rocket fire, grenade explosions, and shootings. In addition, a reported attack on a Chinese restaurant in Kabul was attributed to Islamic State – Khorasan Province. The report also noted several border clashes between Taliban forces and troops from Pakistan and Iran, including incidents in Kandahar Province, Nimruz Province, Khost Province, Paktika Province, Kunar Province, and Nangarhar Province. In some cases, heavy weapons and mortars were used. Drone activity and airstrikes were also recorded in Ghazni Province, Kandahar Province, Khost Province, Maidan Wardak Province, Panjshir Province, and Paktika Province. On November 4, a senior commander of Tehrik‑i‑Taliban Pakistan was killed in a drone strike in Nangarhar Province. During the same period, 47 security incidents directly affected personnel of the United Nations, compared with 42 incidents reported the previous year. The Taliban authorities have not yet issued an official response to the report, while attacks by armed groups, activities by Islamic State – Khorasan Province, and border clashes continue in parts of the country.
