Spain’s Prime Minister Rejects War Amid U.S. Threats

Pedro Sánchez, Prime Minister of Spain, reaffirmed his opposition to war and his support for international law in response to threats from Donald Trump regarding potential termination of trade relations with Spain. In a televised address, Sánchez summarized Spain’s position on global crises, including the wars in Ukraine, Gaza Strip, and the Iraq war more than 20 years ago, with the statement: “No to war.” Trump had previously threatened full commercial sanctions against Spain after the country refused to allow the United States to use the Morón and Rota military bases for potential strikes on Iran. He also accused Spain of failing to increase defense spending and described it as a “terrible NATO partner.” Sánchez rejected any change in Spain’s policy, describing potential U.S. and Israeli military intervention in Iran as “unjustified, dangerous, and outside the framework of international law,” while stressing that this position does not imply support for the Iranian government. In response to U.S. economic threats, the President of France and the President of the European Council expressed solidarity with Spain. Sánchez warned that a possible attack on Iran could have economic and humanitarian consequences similar to the Iraq war, affecting millions and making the world less secure.
