KABUL: Reporters Without Borders (RSF) has expressed deep concern over the ban on publishing live images in Afghanistan’s Kapisa province. In a released statement, the organization noted that this ban has been implemented in 24 provinces of Afghanistan following the enforcement of the “Promotion of Virtue and Prevention of Vice” law in 2024. RSF highlighted that as a result of the restrictions, dozens of television networks have been shut down or forced to limit their operations to radio broadcasts only. The organization stated that the Taliban’s rise to power represents a “death knell” for media freedom and journalist safety in Afghanistan, particularly for female journalists, in a country with a population of 40 million. Furthermore, the statement indicated that media outlets are now required to only publish information that is under Taliban control or presents their narrative favorably. Recently, diversity in the media landscape has diminished, and pressure and repression against journalists have consistently increased. RSF has called on the Taliban leaders to immediately lift all restrictions on media and urged the international community to take practical steps against the ongoing repression of media in Afghanistan.
