KABUL: The European Union has recently agreed to impose sanctions on several Iranian officials. Ambassadors from EU member states reached a consensus to sanction these officials for their involvement in suppressing recent protests. The demonstrations, which spread across the country in early January, were met with deadly actions by the government. The EU countries also approved separate sanctions against Iranian individuals and entities that have assisted Russia in its war in Ukraine. The sanctions, which include asset freezes and travel bans, were approved by the ambassadors and are set to be formally signed by foreign ministers today. The recent protests in Iran began on December 28 due to economic difficulties and the depreciation of the Iranian rial against foreign currencies, evolving into anti-government demonstrations that spread nationwide. Sanctions have been imposed on Interior Minister Iskander Momeni and 14 other officials in connection with the suppression of these protests. It is reported that thousands of individuals were killed during these protests.
