KABUL: Sharzad Akbar, the former chair of Afghanistan’s Independent Human Rights Commission, has condemned the Taliban for their arbitrary arrests, torture, and mistreatment of Afghans, stating that such actions cannot be hidden. In a post on her X account, Akbar emphasized that the Taliban must be held accountable, suggesting that they could be subjected to “scrutiny and accountability.” She referenced the “Inclusivity” document, noting that it clearly outlines access to justice, including international courts and other avenues. The document states that judicial accountability mechanisms are formal, legal processes that can hold perpetrators of serious violations legally responsible or legally obligate governments to answer for violations of international human rights. It is noteworthy that the Taliban recently arrested local journalist Nazira Rashidi in Kunduz and taekwondo coach Khadija Ahmadzada in Herat.
