WASHINGTON: U.S. President Donald Trump has stated that “the time has come to look for a new leader in Iran.” In an interview with Politico, he called for an end to the 37-year rule of Ali Khamenei. Trump’s comments came a day after he thanked Iranian leaders for revoking more than eight hundred executions. He claimed that Khamenei has committed crimes against the people through oppression and violence, leading the country toward total destruction. Protests in Iran against rising prices and the unprecedented fall of the toman have faced extensive restrictions, during which, according to human rights activists, thousands have been killed or injured. The U.S. President has repeatedly threatened that if Iran continues to kill protesters, it will face a severe backlash from the United States.
