KABUL: Russian state-run TASS news agency reported that President Vladimir Putin received the credentials of the Taliban’s appointed ambassador on Thursday, at the Kremlin. The action took place during an official ceremony attended by dozens of foreign diplomats in the Alexander Hall of the Kremlin. During this event, Putin accepted the credentials of 34 new ambassadors, including Gul Hassan, who represents the Taliban in Moscow. TASS adds that ambassadors from European, Asian, African, Latin American, and Middle Eastern countries also presented their credentials to the Russian president. This ceremony is described as the first official acceptance of credentials for the year 2026. The delivery of credentials is typically considered the formal initiation of an ambassador’s mission in the host country. Russia is currently the only country that has recognized the Taliban as the official government of Afghanistan.
