International Crisis Group highlights impact of Taliban rule on Pakistan

KABUL: The International Crisis Group (ICG) has reported that Pakistan has been the most affected country since the Taliban’s takeover of Afghanistan. In a recent report, the ICG, based in Brussels, stated that Pakistan has been impacted more than any other country due to the developments in Afghanistan since the Taliban returned to power in 2021. The organization warned that continued terrorist attacks could compel Islamabad to consider resuming military actions against Afghanistan. The report highlighted that relations between the Taliban in Afghanistan and Pakistan have increasingly become tense. UN observers indicate that the Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) receives support from the Afghan Taliban; however, the Taliban in Kabul deny the presence of Pakistani militants in Afghanistan and portray the violence in Pakistan as an internal issue. The International Crisis Group warned that any major attack from militants could further undermine the fragile peace between Pakistan and its neighbors. The newspaper “Diplomat” reported that 2025 has been a “challenging and security-threatened year” for Pakistan, with approximately 1,709 terrorist attacks resulting in 3,967 fatalities. Experts caution that this ongoing trend could pose serious challenges to Pakistan’s internal stability and regional security in South Asia unless effective political and security strategies are adopted. International think tanks have also warned of increasing crises and potential conflicts between Pakistan and the Taliban in Afghanistan.
