Increase in corporal punishments and deterioration of human rights in Afghanistan

KABUL: Richard Bennett, the UN Special Rapporteur on Human Rights for Afghanistan, has stated that Afghanistan is not a “lost cause” and that the human rights situation remains a litmus test for the international community. During a recent session of the Human Rights Council in Geneva, Bennett remarked that despite the Taliban’s complete control and widespread repression, Afghan citizens—especially women—continue to resist courageously. He emphasized: “The international community must not shy away from upholding human rights principles and supporting the people of Afghanistan. The Taliban have publicly whipped at least 672 individuals this year, including 547 men and 125 women, with judicial confirmation. This figure represents more than a twofold increase compared to last year.” Bennett characterized this situation as indicative of the alarming rise in corporal punishments in Afghanistan, warning that alongside extensive human rights restrictions and repression of women, the security and humanitarian conditions in the country are deteriorating.
