Political experts criticize Taliban’s five-year plan: “Basic needs of the people are overlooked”

  1. KABUL: A number of political analysts argue that the five-year plan announced by the Taliban, titled “Afghanistan Development Strategy,” does not address the urgent problems of the population or the long-term needs of the country. They emphasize that the absence of a constitution and financial transparency limits the implementation of development programs. According to the analysts, if the plan is genuinely five years in scope, it should include critical issues such as girls’ education, women’s right to work, job creation, poverty alleviation, and food security. Aziz Maraj, a political expert, stated on Tuesday to Radio Azadi that the Taliban’s document primarily aims to secure their presence in power, while the public urgently needs jobs, food, and assistance for returnees from Iran and Pakistan. Zabiullah Mujahid, the Taliban spokesperson, introduced the plan that day, claiming that the “Development Strategy” is a comprehensive document for the next five years, covering 15 political, economic, and security sectors. However, he did not respond to journalists’ questions regarding girls’ education and women’s employment. Ghaus Janbaz, another political expert, described the program as “propaganda,” stating that without a constitution and a legitimate, organized government, sustainable development cannot be discussed. Meanwhile, Din Mohammad Hanif, the Taliban’s Minister of Economy, urged the international community during a meeting with the UNAMA delegation to focus not only on humanitarian aid but also on development projects to create job opportunities. Tariq Farhadi, another political expert, noted that development assistance and global investment will return to Afghanistan only if the Taliban comply with the international community’s demands, including reopening schools for girls.
