Iran’s military has confirmed the identity of one of four pilots who it says were killed during an operation involving two Su-24 fighter jets targeting the US Al Udeid air base in Qatar. The identification was made following forensic examinations and DNA testing. Iranian media reported on Wednesday that Brigadier General Majid Kazemi, a pilot of one of the Iranian Air Force’s Su-24 aircraft, had been identified through specialised tests and that his remains would soon be returned to Iran. The Fars News Agency, affiliated with Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, reported that the incident took place on 1 March last year, claiming that two Iranian Su-24 aircraft carried out an attack on the Al Udeid base after bypassing advanced surveillance systems and radar positions. The agency said the aircraft came under attack while returning over the Gulf. Iranian officials have not provided details about the fate of the other three pilots, saying efforts to determine their status are continuing.
