Taliban bans “shirt with pants” in universities

KABUL: Local sources at Kabul University have confirmed that the Taliban’s Ministry of Promotion of Virtue and Prevention of Vice has issued a new directive to all public and private universities in the country. According to the directive, professors and students are not allowed to attend classes wearing “a shirt with pants.” The announcement also emphasizes that beards and hair must conform to Taliban standards. The regulation states that in case of a first violation, a warning will be issued, and if repeated, “legal action” will be taken. This is the latest restriction imposed by the Taliban on educational environments. Since their return to power in August 2021, the Taliban have enforced strict regulations on universities, including gender segregation, mandated specific dress codes, and the prohibition of education for girls beyond the sixth grade. Experts and analysts argue that this decision not only limits the personal freedoms of professors and students but also undermines the quality of education and the academic environment. However, the Taliban claim these decisions are part of “implementing Islamic values.” Many professors and students at universities across the country, including Kabul University, have begun wearing traditional attire, such as long shirts and caps, along with growing their beards.
