KABUL: The Taliban’s Supreme Court has announced that 16 individuals were whipped on Tuesday, in Kabul on charges of buying, selling, and trafficking narcotic tablets, alcohol, and hashish. According to the court’s statement, the primary court for the prevention of narcotics and alcohol in Kabul sentenced these individuals to 10 to 39 lashes and imprisonment ranging from eight months to three years. Reports from the United Nations indicate that the Taliban have whipped at least 234 individuals in public during the months of May and June this year. Additionally, the group has executed ten others in front of hundreds of spectators, including some of their senior officials. International human rights organizations have condemned such punishments as contrary to international law and human dignity, calling for an immediate halt to these practices.
