MEXICO: A deadly riot occurred in the Toxpan prison in Veracruz, Mexico, resulting in the deaths of at least 7 inmates and injuries to 11 others. The conflict began between inmates and members of a criminal group known as “Sombra.” Security forces regained control of the prison after the unrest and managed to extinguish the fires. Published images show thick smoke rising from the facility and injured individuals being transported to medical centers. Mexican prisons, plagued by overcrowding and the presence of drug gangs, frequently experience violence, often reflecting rivalries that extend beyond prison walls. Human rights organizations have called for improved conditions and investigations into the incidents.
