KABUL: The head of the Taliban’s National Environment Protection Agency has requested Afghanistan’s inclusion in the United Nations climate negotiations (COP), citing severe climate conditions and water shortages that have deeply impacted the lives and economy of Afghans. Last year, a Taliban delegation participated as observers in the 29th International Conference on Climate Change held in Baku, Azerbaijan, but they were not official participants. Mati-ul Haq Khalis, the head of Afghanistan’s National Environmental Protection Agency, stated that since the Taliban came to power in 2021, the delay in environmental projects has caused significant harm to the Afghan people. He expressed a desire for Afghanistan to participate in this year’s 30th International Conference on Climate Change, which will take place in Brazil. He noted, “Afghanistan has been severely affected by climate change. Drought, water scarcity, reduction in arable land, sudden floods, and food security threats are significantly impacting people’s lives and the economy.”
